This was formalised with the signing of the European Corridor Management Agreement (ECMA) during the meeting on 12 – 13 May 2026 in Riga, Germany. The EC ECM Agreement was signed on the 18th of June and 20th of June in Basel. With the accession of Switzerland to EuRIS, the coverage of the European Information Gateway is extended as all sections of the Rhine waterway become accessible. For their part, the Swiss river ports are strengthening their presence in the European inland waterway network.

The main function of the European Information Portal, which has been operational since 2022, is to provide real-time static and dynamic information to vessels and transport actors on the European inland waterway network, which exceeds 27 000 km in Europe. Its aim is to ensure efficient and safe navigation, especially on the Rhine, which is one of the main transport corridors in Europe.

River Information Services (RIS) are a set of harmonised information services that support the management of traffic and transport activities in inland navigation. The use of RIS improves traffic safety and increases transport efficiency by facilitating the exchange of traffic and transport related information between all actors involved in inland navigation.

Crews on board receive real-time information about the current situation on the planned route. This includes data on waiting times, organised events and any difficulties that may affect journey duration and route planning.

The development of the EuRIS portal, which is the result of a partnership between 13 countries, continues with a major focus on improving usability and data quality. With the signing of the ECMA, the publication of Swiss inland waterways data on the EuRIS portal will be realised in the coming months.

The Swiss River Ports (Port of Switzerland), acting as the competent Swiss authority in the field of navigation on the Rhine, became an official partner of the European River Information System EuRIS, in which the State Enterprise “Port Infrastructure” also participates.
