On European Maritime Day, BPI Co. launches the rehabilitation of Burgas breakwater

Ivaylo Ivanov, the Director General of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.), officially announced the start of the rehabilitation works on the old breakwater at Port of Burgas on May 20, 2025 – the European Maritime Day. Speaking at the special ceremony, he emphasized that the modernization of the breakwater will ensure safe and reliable navigation, while enhancing the efficiency of port services. “This project aligns with BPI Co.’s long-term vision for the development of modern and sustainable maritime infrastructure in accordance with European transport and environmental policies. It represents yet another step toward strengthening the competitiveness of Port of Burgas,” he added.

The breakwater’s rehabilitation is expected to significantly improve the operational capabilities of the port, generating economic benefits for Burgas and the whole region. In a written address to the BPI Co. Director General, the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, noted that the construction of a new pedestrian walkway as part of the project will also make the port area more accessible to both residents and visitors.

Martin Georgiev, Head of the Managing Authority of the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027 pointed out that BPI Co. continues to pursue a strategic approach in the planning and implementation of infrastructure initiatives being forward-looking and business-oriented.

The project, co-funded under the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021–2027, involves raising the height of the breakwater and reinforcing its structural components. The initiative is expected to yield long-term benefits for the city, supporting the region’s sustainable economic growth through a modernized and resilient port infrastructure. Once completed, the project will further advance BPI Co.’s mission to transform Port of Burgas into a modern logistics hub of European significance.
