BPI Co. to breathe new life into Sts. Quiricus and Julietta Island
21 Януари 2026
By a decision adopted by the Council of Ministers on 21 January 2026, part of Sts. Quiricus and Julietta Island, located near the town of Sozopol, will be transferred for management to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. As the governing authority responsible for the development and modernization of Bulgaria’s public transport ports, the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) will assume the management of the property, undertaking the reconstruction of the quay wall and the adjacent infrastructure and transforming the island into an attractive destination for tourists and local residents.
The project envisions the island’s development into a contemporary passenger terminal for cabotage shipping and a modern yacht marina. Plans include the creation of a public access zone and facilities for the berthing of sightseeing and excursion vessels. In this way, the quay wall, whose length is 300 meters and depths ranging between 3.5 and 5 meters, together with the surrounding area, will be able to fully accommodate tourist maritime traffic, while the fishing port will be optimized to provide ideal conditions for fishing vessels. This will turn the island into an attractive maritime center that meets all European standards for safety and quality.
The Ministry of Culture, which has managed the property until now, will retain full access to the island’s archaeological zone and will continue to be responsible for its preservation and protection. Through the modernization planned by BPI Co., favorable conditions will also be created for the development of the Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol, which holds the status of a Category 2 Institute of Underwater Cultural Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO. The synergy between the development of modern port infrastructure and the preservation of cultural heritage will establish a unique model of sustainable development.
