The key role of Bulgarian ports for a sustainable European economy was highlighted at an international forum

Today, ports must combine their role as competitive commercial hubs with their strategic function in ensuring the resilience of the European economy and supply chains with these words the Director General of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) Stanislav Yordanov addressed participants at the international conference Circular Ports for Global Trade: Green Infrastructure and Smart Connectivity, held on 14 March 2026 in Thessaloniki.

Bulgarian ports were presented within a panel discussion dedicated to the role of ports in achieving sustainable trade, enhancing regional connectivity, and fostering economic development across the region. In his presentation, Stanislav Yordanov emphasized the need for ports to evolve into modern logistics hubs, ensuring efficient intermodal connections between maritime, land, and inland waterway transport.

The Director General also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation between ports in the Black Sea and Aegean regions, as well as the role of European policies in the development of modern and sustainable port infrastructure.

The conference was organized by the Bulgarian-Greek Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the support of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Among the participants were Christos Dimas, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Greece; Konstantinos Gkioulekas, Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia–Thrace region); Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Prime Minister of Bulgaria (2001–2005); Traycho Traykov, Minister of Energy; Yulian Popov, Minister of Environment and Water; as well as representatives of the port and logistics sectors from Bulgaria and Greece.

The forum provided a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices, as well as for exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the port and logistics sectors in Southeast Europe.
