Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPIC) and Technical University – Varna have developed a joint pilot project to enhance maritime navigation safety. Harbour Safety is a software tool development for quantitative risk assessment of various vessel types’ maneuvering and improving navigation conditions and port throughput. The development was presented during the Second Plenary Meeting of the ILIAD project, held in Rome, Italy from January 24-26, 2023.
The task of BPI Co. and the other Bulgarian project partner – Technical University of Varna, is to develop a digital twin of Varna Bay and the navigation channels connecting it to Varna Lake. This way, computer models of the bay’s processes will assist vessel navigation during adverse weather conditions and improve their safety.
BPIC, together with 55 partners from 18 countries worldwide, is participating in the development of a digital twin of the World Ocean as part of the EU initiative to build a digital Earth supermodel by 2050. The joint activity is being carried out within the framework of the Integrated Digital Framework for Comprehensive Maritime Data and Information Services (ILIAD) project. The project aims to develop virtual models to reflect changes and processes occurring in the ocean and create an interoperable, real-environment data-driven, cost-effective Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO). The project coordinator is Netcompany-Intrasoft, Belgium.
