The Best in Sailing Awarded

The General Director of SE “Port Infrastructure” Angel Zaburtov was among the official guests at the ceremony for presenting the annual awards for best achievements in sailing. The ceremonial award traditionally gathered the sailing community on December 20, 2017, in the building of Varna Municipality. The prestigious event was held with the support of BPI Co., and Angel Zaburtov presented the awards to some of the winners.

The most prestigious sailing award in Bulgaria, “Golden Globe Cor Caroli”, was received for the fourth consecutive time by the sailor from Kavarna, Dr. Vasil Kurtev. On May 17, 2017, in Varna, the 80-year-old navigator completed his solo circumnavigation with the yacht “Odesos”, built by himself, covering over 26,000 nautical miles in 21 months.
The transitional award for the best Bulgarian maritime sailing achievement of the year was presented by the “Cor Caroli” Foundation, chaired by Captain Toma Tomov. The prize is established in honor of the famous solo voyage of Capt. Georgi Georgiev and bears the name of his yacht.

The date December 20 is emblematic, as on this day in 1976, Captain Georgiev’s circumnavigation, recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, began from the Cuban capital Havana and finished a year later. This year, the presentation of the “Golden Globe Cor Caroli” award coincides with the 40th anniversary of the remarkable round-the-world sailing voyage.
