Young and talented swimmers Yordan Yanchev from Sandanski and Vasiliki Kadoglu from Varna became the winners of the 80th edition of the “Galata – Varna” swimming marathon. They swam the distance between Cape Galata and the second breakwater of Varna beach in 53:37 min. and 61:13 min. respectively.
The sports competition, which has become a symbolic celebration for the city, was held on August 2, 2020, in our maritime capital with the support of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company. The Head of Public Relations and Protocol Department Mariela Ganchovska and the Director of SPD “RCT – Black Sea” Milen Todorov presented special awards to the winners on behalf of BPI Co..
220 participants tested their strength, courage, and endurance in the competition. The straight-line distance of the route is 4,400 m, but due to the impossibility of swimming without marked corridors in open waters, the swimmers actually had to cover nearly 5,000 m to the finish line.
The International Traditional Galata – Varna Swimming Marathon is held every year on the first Sunday of August. It is organized by PSC Black Sea, Varna Municipality, and the Naval Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee is Mayor Ivan Portnih. The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Youth and Sports Krasen Kralev.
Among the official guests at the sports event were the Regional Governor Stoyan Pasev, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov, legendary swimmer Petar Stoychev, and others.
